ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

In 1955, the U.S. Navy and Air Force co-sponsored the development of a Mach 2 VTOL jet fighter to be developed by Bell Aircraft.  Dubbed the XF-109, the plane was distinguished by the twin jet engines mounted on rotatable pods situated at the ends of each wing.   When moved into a vertical position, these engines would get the fighter airborne without benefit of a runway; they would then move to the horizontal for conventional flight.

Unfortunately, the Navy pulled out of the project in 1960.  The Air Force withdrew the following year.  The plane had only made it to the mockup stage when the project officially died.

This beautifully cast 1:72 scale resin kit from Anigrand was released in 2004 and is still available from Anigrand Craftswork.

This model was built from an original issue.
