In the 1980s, rapid advances in computer technology coupled with breakthroughs in composite engineered ushered in a whole new era of experimental aircraft. "Stealth" planes -- aircraft that were all but invisible to conventional radar and infrared tracking systems -- were the focus of America's aeronautical research efforts, efforts that ultimately yielded excellent dividends. Because this stealth research was conducted in ultra-secrecy, models of the actual aircraft were not available to the public until the aircraft themselves were operational. |
