Named for its developers, Boeing Aircraft (BO) and the University of Michigan Aeronautical Research Center (MARC), the BOMARC was a ground-to-surface anti-aircraft missile whose latter models had a range of up to 400 miles. At take-off, the missile was propelled by two outboard solid rocket boosters. Once it reached sufficient speed and altitude, the vehicle's inboard ramjet took over until intercept. The BOMARC was first test flown in 1952 and declared operational in 1960. BOMARCs remained on 24-hour alert throughout the United States until the early 1970s, when they were finally retired. |
Revell introduced this impressive kit, complete with launch pad, in the late 1950's, and again as a "History Maker" release in the mid-1980s. A popular subject, the BOMARC was also cast in plastic by Comet and Aurora models. This is a copy of the Revell 1980's-era "History Maker" edition. |
