Like the United States, the Soviet Union "borrowed" much of its early Cold War technology from the defeated Germans. One particular research project involved building their own version of the DFS 346 rocket-powered research plane. Two prototypes were built as part of this effort, the Samolyot 5-1, which was an unpowered glider, and the Samolyot 5-2, which was equipped with a Dushkin RD-2M3VF rocket engine. The latter aircraft was intended to launch using a wheeled trolley and land using fuselage- and wing-mounted skids. Unpowered tests on the 5-2 began in January, 1949; the project was inexplicably abandoned before full powered flight could be attempted. |
Released in 1999 and re-released twice since, this simple 1/72-scale all-resin kit featured a simple cockpit tub and seat as well as a vacuform canopy. For this model, the raised wing details were added using strip styrene and the wing-mounted skids were made by pilfering parts from other "junk" kits. Unicraft provided no decals with this model; again these were "borrowed" from other sources. This model was built from the kit's third issue. |
