ABOUT THE DESIGN:    ABOUT THE MODEL:
Beginning in March 1952, Collier's Magazine ran a multi-issue series titled, "Man Will Conquer Space Soon!"  Detailing Dr. Werner von Braun's visions for late 20th century flights into low orbit, the moon and eventually Mars, the series featured dramatic spaceflight paintings by noted artists Chesley Bonestall, Fred Freeman and Rolf Klep.

Among the vehicles starring in this series was Von Braun's Moon Ship, a complex, thoroughly un-aerodynamic rocket designed to carry dozens of intrepid explorers to the lunar surface. Von Braun envisioned an expedition of two passenger ships and one cargo ship on a mission that would last weeks, far more ambitious than the eventual three-man Apollo missions that would eventually take Americans to the moon just 15 years later.
