ABOUT THE DESIGN:    ABOUT THE MODEL:
The Nord 500 was a company-funded aircraft designed to test the efficacy of ducted-fan propulsion in Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) applications.  The single-seat "Cadet" was equipped with two tilting ducted-fan engines that could be repositioned for vertical or horizontal flight.  Specifications called for the plane to reach speeds up to 218 mph.

Two "Cadet" prototypes were built.  The first, completed 1967, was used only for mechanical and ground tests.  The second, flown a year later, never got beyond the tethered flight stage.  When Nord merged with Aerospatiale Corporation in 1970, plans to develop a larger, more powerful version of the plane were scrapped.  The project was ultimately abandoned in 1971.
