ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

A super-duper police helicopter equipped with advanced sensors, long-range microphones, a forward-mounted six-barrel electric canon and a “whisper mode” that allowed the vehicle to fly virtually silently, Blue Thunder was designed to be the ultimate in aerial law enforcement.  In reality, the craft was a modified French Gazelle (Aerospatiale) helicopter tricked out with a dozen or more prop gimmicks to give it that “high tech” look.  The chopper later starred in the short-lived “Blue Thunder” TV series (1984).

The “Blue Thunder” TV series gave this model a longer shelf life than is common for most movie series tie-ins.  However, by the early 1990s, the kit was out of production and available only on the collector’s market.  In the early 21st Century it was re-released by a Korean company (which also published an Airwolf repop), and could once again be purchased from overseas suppliers via the Internet and Ebay.

This model was built from an original issue.
