ABOUT THE DESIGN:

  ABOUT THE MODEL:
In April 2010, the U.S. Air Force successfully launched the Boeing X-37B, an unmanned reusable "mini-shuttle" dedicated to long-term orbital missions. With America's Space Shuttle set to retire in 2011, Boeing proposed upscaling this now-proven winged spacecraft design to serve as a replacement.

The X-37C would be twice as large as the X-37B, but still only about a quarter of the size of the Space Shuttle. Its mission would be purely that of a crew transport vehicle, capable of carrying up two six astronauts, plus a pilot and co-pilot, into low orbit. Cargo space would be extremely limited. Personnel would transfer to and from the vehicle via a docking collar at the rear. When docking with the International Space Station (ISS), the X-37C would have to "back in" to make the connection.

To date, Boeing's proposal remains just that.
