In the spring of 1939, French engineer A. Kalko contacted executives at the SNCAO aircraft manufacturing company to propose a radical fighter concept in which all major elements were located as close to the craft's center of gravity as possible to increase overall maneuverability. Intrigued, SNCAO ordered a wind-tunnel model built. Although the results showed some promise, problems, particularly concerning positioning of the air intakes and engine cooling, made further development problematic. Ultimately, SNCAO abandoned the project, leaving the ACA-5 yet another fascinating "What If?" proposition. |
