ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

A traditional X-15 hypersonic research plane modified with additional fuel tanks and a ramjet engine, the X-15A-2, flown by USAF Major William J. "Pete" Knight, achieved an all-time speed record of Mach 6.72, or 4,535 mph on October 3, 1967.   Only the space shuttle has ever flown faster.

This popular 1/72-scale version of the X-15 was the first to allow the modeler to build the advanced X-15A-2 version.  First released in the early 1980s, it was subsequently re-released in 1987 as a "Young Astronauts" kit and again in 1996 in a "Selected Subjects" edition.  It is finished in the white "ablative" paint designed to burn and tear free during re-entry.

This is a copy of the original early '80s version.
