The XV-9A was a one-off testbed for a system known as "hot cycle" propulsion. Instead of simply spinning the helicopter's blades, hot cycle propulsion ducted jet exhaust through the blade tips themselves to achieve greater power. Two side-mounted General Electric YT64-GE-6 turbo provided the exhaust.

The Hughes SV-9A first flew on November 6, 1964. The chopper's noise and high fuel consumption ultimately led to the project being cancelled in August 1965.
