ABOUT THE DESIGN:    ABOUT THE MODEL:
While Cold War strategists were focusing on ICMBs, missile-carrying submarines and long-range bombers, some in the Pentagon still saw a need for low-speed, close-in ground attack aircraft that could serve in "brush war"-style conflicts such as those blossoming in Southeast Asia.  Chance Vought, one of the Navy's prime contractors, proposed this advanced turboprop design to replace the already aging Douglas A-1 Skyraider, which served a similar purpose.  Unfortunately (for Chance Vought), the project never got beyond the design stage.
