Before turbojets were developed, Paul Schmidt of Munich explored the possibility of using pulse jets (as eventually used on the V-1 flying bomb) to power aircraft. Partnering with Messerschmitt in the early 1940s, Schmidt developed several design studies for pulse jet-driven aircraft under the P.1079 project designation. Each design featured its power plant in a different location. The 1079/2, the second in Schmidt's series, posited a single 500kp thrust SR 500 Argus pulse jet within an extended fuselage breathing through a ventral fuselage intake. Like all of Schmidt's designs, the 1079/2 was eventually deemed unfeasible. |
