ABOUT THE DESIGN

ABOUT THE KIT

During the 1930s, powered gliders called "Planerlets" were all the rage in Eastern Europe.  The Nieman KhAI-3 Planerlet, built by the Avaivnito company of Kharkov, Ukraine, could carry up to 12 people -- including the pilot -- in the two single-row gondolas situated on either side of the plane's centerline.  Transporting both passengers and cargo, the KaAI-3 was flown successfully throughout the late 1930s.

This unusual, elegantly streamlined aircraft was kitted by Igor Shestakov's Ukraine-based Unicraft company in 2002.  It came with a choice of either clear vacuform gondola canopies and visible internal seating, or solid resin gondola covers (shown here).

This model was built from the kit's first-run.
